Clique Kit Club May Blog Hop

Welcome Ladies!  I am so honored to be a part of my very first blog hop with  Clique Kits.  I am so excited to share my May layouts with you all; but first I have a little secret to share with you all: I have never been a part of a blog hop before and I am a little nervous.  It has also been a long time since I have blogged; so I feel a little bit like a “newbie” here… please be gentle.

Okay, so that uncomfortable business is complete !  Now on the task of showing you what I have been up to with the May Northern Lights Kit!  This is my first kit with The Clique and I have to say I am super-impressed with how packed this kit was… I have four layouts to share with you today (a fifth layout is sitting in my craft room awaiting completion) and I still have tons of product left!

I have a major pattern paper obsession, so I was thrilled to find so many papers from Fancy Pants and Basic Grey in the kit.  These papers really made the kit extremely versatile , I really cannot believe the different looks I got from one kit.

Before the kit arrived I was anticipating the bright primary colors from Fancy Pant’s Atwell Collection.  I find red and yellow perfect colors to scrap my two nephews, however my personal scrap stash lacks a whole lot of these colors.  I knew I had some pictures of the boys that were just waiting for this paper.

For “Happy, Happy, Happy” I used the fabulous exclusive circle cut file that can be downloaded with this month’s kit.  I backed the circles with various papers from the kit and laid it over the fabulous black and white paper from Fancy Pants.  I added a few bits and pieces from the fabulous assortment of ephemera that Clique Kits includes each month.  I just love that flair!

The awesome assortment of tags in this month’s kit was the true star of the show on the “Ready, Set, Go” layout.  I love the fun whimsy they created while making layers to mount this cheeky picture of my youngest nephew.  I dug through my own paper stash to find this now classic sheet of Amy Tangerine Kraft paper.  I wanted something more than white on the background, but knew I had to keep it neutral for the tags to really shine.  After trimming the tags down to fit behind my photo mat, I punched various circles out of the remaining tags and used them instead of my usual clusters of enamel dots.  I grabbed a stamp and some ink and stamped “#HasMyHeart” along the border in navy and teal.  Again, the fabulous flair from this months kit caught my eye.  I made a messy nest of string (thanks for the inspiration Missy Whidden) and nestled another flair button in it.

After working exclusively with the Fancy Pants that came in the kit, I decided it was time to start using the Basic Grey papers in the kit.  I cut the heart with my die cut machine and backed it with the gorgeous watercolor effect paper in the kit.  I had purchased some pieces of this black and white striped paper from We Are Memory Keepers from the shop and used it as my background. I love all the exclusive die cuts that came in this months kit (another secret, I joined Clique Kits primarily for these little beauties… are they not fabulous?)

I created my own cut file for this last page and I think it turned out fabulous.  I backed the negative space of the cut file with various Basic Grey papers from this month’s kit.  I then added some more of the exclusive die cuts, wood veneer flowers and enamel dots.  I loved the layout, but I still felt something was missing… so I watered down some Dylusions paint and splattered some purple drips all over the page.

Thank You for joining me today!  I hope you enjoyed the pages I shared.  The next stop on the hop is Renee Aslette.  Keep on Hopping!

Welcome Back to Odd Bird Out

My dear readers and visitors,

It is with great guilt that I apologize for my long absence from the world of blogging!  Never fear, however!  I am back and have so many great things to share with you all.  Please stay tuned, things are going to start “hopping” around here real soon!

Another Large Layout Share

I apologize for the lack of layout shares lately.

This has nothing to do with scrapping, but I feel I should share it anyhow. I have been battling the bully that is my self-esteem over the last few weeks.  This bully attacks almost every fall; when the weather turns colder I always turn on myself….  of course it never helps when you encounter the “real life”  bullies that make you question who and what you are.  I plead, from the bottom of my heart, for my readers/viewers to take a look at themselves and their interactions with the public (strangers and friends alike) and remember to be kind.  You never know the kind of internal struggles someone is dealing with.  Words, looks and tone of voice can slice through the skin like a knife… and some people (even those you least expect) can struggle with the encounter long after you have forgotten it.

PHEW…  I feel a bit better.  Now, onto the layout shares!

Video Links For My Scrapbooking 101 Students

Each time that I teach the Free Scrapbooking 101 Class at work I find myself short on time and not covering all the information that is contained within the “leaders guide” provided to me by “big business.”  Perhaps this is because I include more information that I think is more important for a beginner “scrapper.”   So I am always closing the class by recommending that my students go back and watch a few videos on-line.  Here are links to some of those videos that do an amazing job elaborating and demonstrating the techniques and ideas that I concentrate on in this class.  Many  veteran scrappers will already be familiar with these ideas…

Glitter Girl Adventure 004: Layer upon Layer – Glitter Girl sets out to find easy ways to add more ‘stuff’ to scrapbook pages that seem a bit bare.

Glitter Girl Adventure 008: Pick a Pack of Patterned Paper – Glitter Girl takes on an adventure in picking a pack of patterned paper.  Her adventure takes her through her thoughts on choosing a less-than-obvious colour scheme from photos, picking the patterned papers and embellishments, then creating a page from start to finish.

Glitter Girl Adventure 013: Multiphoto Mayhem – Glitter Girl takes on a multi-photo challenge.   Her adventure takes her through a work-in-progress album and the creation of a layout with four 4×6 photos on a single 12×12 page

Glitter Girl Adventure 038 :: Clustered Combinations – Glitter Girl brings you an extended episode with full details on creating clustered embellishments for your scrapbook pages.

I used a “new to me” trick on this page.  I can not remember where I borrowed this trick from, (one of the hundreds of youtube videos, I am sure).  I used a brand new pencil eraser and ink to stamp circles where I didn’t have enough enamel dots for.  I love the way it turned out and the mix with actual dots.

Just Checking In

For the past few weeks, I have been scrapping like a mad woman. I have been using a lot of older pictures and trying desperately to use papers I have been hoarding for years. I know that we all have this stash; things we HAD to have and have never really touched or papers that we loved and still have lots left. I also have an extensive stash of 6×6 paper pads I have been holding on to.

I am one of those scrappers that tend to only want to use the newest lines… So older stuff tends to get forgotten. The sad truth is papers still tend to get wrinkled. I am  trying get some of these papers used before I officially deem them too old or too “destroyed” to use.

“Get those papers out of ‘hoard-zone’ and use them or don’t buy any more paper.” This is the continual dialogue in my head.

Getting to the main point of this post. I have a HUGE stack of pages that I need to photograph and post. I am dreading  it because it will take a fair amount of time. My question is rather you like all the detail shots or would a giant page dump be adequate?

I enjoy keeping the blog and having a running record of what I have done online, but ultimately what I share is for all of you. I  would really like your opinion on this one. Thanks!

My Anchor In A Stormy Sea with Michaels’ Hot Buy – Nautical

The Layout

The Details

Red, Navy and Blue have become favorite color choices for my boy layouts this summer.  So many companies got it so right this year.  I have loved Crate Paper’s Ahoy There, Bo-Bunny’s Fourth of July offerings and so many others… I couldn’t pass this paper collection that is currently a Hot Buy at Michaels.  I am unable to discern an actual “brand” on the packaging, but I suspect it is from DCWV.

DSCN2719The quality of this stack is incredible!  It is an actual “thick” cardstock and it also has a nice weave-like texture.  It is also double sided.  I saw  the hearts and anchors and I was sold (they were only $7.00 this week; of course my employee discount made it even more of a steal.  I really like how this layout turned out.  It was super simple and super quick too!

I added a few wood veneer pieces from my stash…  I am almost out of the anchor’s and Hobby Lobby is no longer carrying them… I did find that ACOT is still selling them, so all hope is not lost.
